Whoa, is this thing SAFE?

Helen took Ethan into the moving truck we rented to haul building materials for the house, and he was a little weirded out, but overall thought it was the bomb.

we bought a decrepit, ramshackle turn-of-the-century little 750sq.ft. house a year ago for less than the cost of most SUV's... we've been cursing ourselves ever since. this particular truck was for new pre-hung doors (four interior, two exterior- won't it be nice to finally lock the house at night instead of piling boxes/rubble in front of the doors?), 8 more sheets of drywall for the room we've been pretending wasn't there for a year (i do laundry in the dark so i don't have to see it.), and some hardi-panel (that's concrete/fiber siding, 8ft x 4ft sheets- extremely heavy stuff) to replace the plywood skirting around the exterior perimeter of the house, which has dry-rotted completely and is beginning to ruin the sill plates (that's the big beams that hold up the perimeter of the house). we've learned a lot in the course of tearing this place down to studs, ripping out floors/subflooring, completely replumbing & rewiring (there was only two outlets when we moved in, and the wires were still that scary cloth covered stuff- we could see many scorch marks where things had been testy...), creating a new kitchen from scratch, reworking the bathroom from scratch (we ripped until there was only a big hole where the bathroom once was because the rot was so awful), drywalling every room and installing new subflooring/flooring, trim, etc etc etc... while living in it (less than 800 ft sq, no garage to speak of- just a moldy shed) with two toddlers, running a home business, and being a sanctuary for my mom and her four kids while they have no power, and no hot water or laundry facilities. we're insane, i know. you don't need to tell me. *grin*

tim swears "never again" is really all he's learned from this. what have i learned? next time, *I* get to design the house (the fun part) then hand over the rest of it to a contractor. he can give me a bill with the keys to the front door. *grin*

How wonderful to be young and full of energy--Ti'Anna and you and Tim. Our first house wasn't a lot better, but the first step is always hard. I am so grateful that you are enjoying the children, and know that the house is not as important as you might think. There will be lots of houses, but only one Ti'anna and Ethan. Hope the senior Carradines made it safely and are being helpful with the house. Grandmommy
